Holy, Holy, Holy

The Captain is God on his quarterdeck and in his ship. Hobbs knows this, as he knows that God flooded the earth in the time of Noah, and he doesn't claim to understand either deity. An old man, perhaps, but still the Captain, still the God, and his cabin is his own domain, where he may do as he pleases. No man needs to understand God or Captain to serve him well and truly.

He keeps the Captain's indiscretions from his forked-tongued lieutenants. Hobbs has the sense to leave his trousers buckled and his arse hidden, unlike certain curly-headed Lucifers.
