Patrimony

When Bran read Geoffrey of Monmouth and complained of how ludicrous it was, Owen Davies realized that something was wrong. He bought Malory and White, hardbound books that Bran read and mocked.

Each night, Owen said, "I'm sorry, Gwennie."

He could not say the words "your father" to Bran.

When Bran left for university, Owen wrote him a letter, burned it, and wrote another copy. The boy -- man -- was away from the haunted hills. He might believe, or he might think his poor da had gone mad from loneliness.

The truth was his birthright whether he accepted it or not.
