Even when Lucy's face was dirty with the filth of the city, her hair was long and golden. At first, she retained some of her earlier grace and beauty, an echo of the charms that had ruined her. The lustre of her hair and the quickness of her step brought her to the beds of sailors, students, and scriveners, cheerless, charmless men.
In time, her eyes lost their sanity and her hunger drove her toward anyone with a coin. Her former downstairs neighbor caressed her falling breasts and pressed four cruel, cold fingers between her legs. They both whimpered, "Benjamin."
