Title: Invariable
Fandom: DCU (Robin: Year One)
Pairing: Jim Gordon/Dick Grayson
Rating: Content some readers may find disturbing. I mean it.
Summary: The bitter truth about Gotham police.
Notes: Betty specifically requested this pairing, though she did not specify the time frame.

Gordon looks at the boy, then back at Batman. A trusted ally, perhaps, but not necessarily a friend. Not necessarily a trusted person.

Not the boy's father, surely. Batman is not that old, and the boy is not that young.

"You're taking in children, now?" Gordon says to Batman.

"He is my partner."

"Ah." Hell of a partner, all long legs and maybe, maybe in his teens. Possibly.

Damn pretty boy, though.

"Send him away for a minute," Gordon says, jerking his chin at the kid.

Batman glances at him. "Robin -- give us a moment."

"You've got it, boss," and the kid flips off the building. Some kind of gymnast, maybe.

"Give me one good reason not to call child protective on you." Gordon crosses his arms.

"He's not in any more danger with me than he would be on the streets."

"No?"

Batman shakes his head. "No."

"And I should accept this -- why?"

"He's my partner."

"Your -- partner." Gordon raises an eyebrow. "That's an ambiguous word."

"He's fully capable. As much as anyone would need to be, for me to work with him."

"He's a child."

"No." Batman makes a gesture, made more dramatic by the cape. "He's not."

"Prove it."

Batman actually hesitates. It makes Gordon shiver to see. But he speaks into something or other, saying, "Robin," and the kid comes back.

"All set?" That smile would kill anyone but Batman with its sheer glee.

"The commissioner would like proof that you're an adult."

Robin tilts his head to one side. So young. So terribly young.

Then he falls to his knees in front of Gordon.

He's not wearing leggings, even. But that smile --

"Okay, I can do that."

Gordon stares at him. Beautiful. Young. Too young. Too beautiful.

And --

He's already working with Batman. Breaking one law.

Two, as the boy unzips his pants for him.

It's true; Gotham cops are invariably corrupt.
